Chris works in Japanese and American traditional, plus fine line black and grey and lettering. His background traces back to the Bert Grimm lineage, a line of tattooing that runs to 1929. So the traditional rules aren't theory for him, they're how he was taught. He's a good fit if you want a Japanese piece built to last.
What To Expect
Japanese tattooing , Irezumi, is built around flow. The subject matter (koi, dragons, tigers, hannya masks, snakes, flowers) sits inside a background of wind, water, and clouds that ties the whole piece to the shape of your body. That's why a Japanese sleeve tattoo reads as one design instead of a collection of separate tattoos.
Your artist will talk through placement first, then subject, then background. Traditional Japanese work uses heavy black and strong outlines on purpose: it holds up as the years go by and stays readable from across a room.
